Hello and welcome to Yayu Elementary School! We appreciate your taking the time to get to know more about us. We are one of four elementary schools on Orchid Island, and as of 2016 are the largest elementary school on the island of Lanyu in terms of student enrollment. Our school is located in Yayo Village, Orchid Island and our students are comprised mostly of Tao aboriginal children from the village of Yayo.
Yayu Elementary School was first established in 1947 as a class for students from Yayo Village. At the time, classes were held on the only elementary school on the island, which was Lanyu Elementary School. In 1955, Yayu Elementary School officially became a branch school of Lanyu Elementary School. In August of 1963, official plans to build a separate school for the students of Yayo Village were brought into discussion. Due to the school’s location near the sea, developers made thorough plans on how to protect the school from typhoons and large waves. In 1968, these plans were put into effect and the school was officially named Yayo Elementary School. In the same year, our schools first classroom was constructed. In 1977, further construction to the school included new science and art classrooms, as well as a school library. In 1990, the first teacher dorms were constructed on the school premises. In 1994, the construction of the school’s first polyurethane runway for track and field competition was started. The construction ended in 1996 and is currently the only polyurethane track and field runway on the island’s four elementary school campuses.
Our school’s core values are hope, health, creativity, and gratitude.
Hope – We believe that it is important for our students to have a sense of confidence in and outside of the classroom. We hope to instill students with a spirit of optimism and hope towards school and towards life in general.
Health – We care deeply about the health of our students and hope to promote good health through exercise and education about proper diet and nutrition. Healthy students are happy students, and good health starts with proper education.
Creativity – We believe that creativity is also an essential part of our school’s learning environment. Not only do we encourage the students to be creative, our teachers also strive to use creative methods of teaching in the classroom.
Gratitude –We believe that being gracious is an essential part of being a human being. We hope to teach students to be grateful for every little thing in life, including gratitude towards their friends, teachers, and parents. We also strive to teach the importance of mutual respect as well as respect for our earth, the environment, and all living beings.
It has been our pleasure to introduce to you our school on Orchid Island. We sincerely hope that you may one day come visit and enjoy the beauty of our school’s campus, as well as experience first-hand the warmth and friendliness of our wonderful students. In the meantime, please enjoy the rest of our website and thank you for taking the time to get to know our school better!
